Puppies and Dogs Should Not Be Over-Bathed
Bathing your puppy too frequently can strip their coat of its natural oils and damage it in the long run. I know it can be so tempting to give your new puppy a bath right away, especially when you have that lovely-smelling shampoo ready to go. You’ve waited so long for your puppy, and the excitement of finally having them makes you want to pamper them. But trust me, just wait.
The Timing of Your Puppy’s Bath
99% of the time, I have bathed your puppy about one hour before you pick them up. If I didn’t bathe them right before, it’s because they were bathed the day before for pictures. If your puppy was shipped to you, rest assured, they were bathed either that morning or the night before.
Whitening Shampoos: Beware
Have you ever seen those Maltese dogs that are shockingly white and silky? While they look gorgeous, this is often achieved through the use of whitening shampoos, which contain bleach. Yes, bleach! The result may look beautiful, but it comes at a cost. These shampoos strip the coat, making it thin and fragile. The dog’s coat may look white, but each hair strand has been damaged beyond repair.
Dog groomers often use these whitening shampoos on white dog breeds, despite the warning labels that come with them. You’ll have a hard time finding these warnings online, believe me, I tried. After ten minutes of searching for a label to show you, I gave up. It seems they don’t want you to know what’s really in these products.
My Own Experience with Whitening Shampoo
Many years ago, when I was just starting as a Maltese breeder, I ordered a bottle of whitening shampoo from a catalog. (Yes, before the internet!) I thought this was exactly what I needed for my white puppies, and I used it for a year before I took a closer look at the label. I was horrified to see that it said not to use the product on dogs under the age of six months. My puppies were only six weeks old! The reason for the restriction? It contained bleach. That was a hard lesson learned.
Hidden Dangers in Shampoo Ingredients
Many shampoos, including those marketed for dogs, contain formaldehyde. Yes, you read that right—formaldehyde. This is a known human carcinogen, and it pops up in all kinds of places you wouldn’t expect, including dog shampoo. Formaldehyde is used in products like pressed wood, hair treatments, and even some plastic and paper items. It is also present in many personal care products as a preservative.
Shockingly, formaldehyde has been linked to serious health issues, including ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), cancer, and damage to the central nervous system. Exposure to formaldehyde can cause respiratory issues, including chest pain, coughing, and shortness of breath. It has also been associated with increased asthma and allergies in children.
Avoid These Dangerous Ingredients
Formaldehyde is not the only harmful ingredient to watch out for in dog shampoos and other personal care products. Other toxic chemicals include:
- 1,4-dioxane: Found in bath products and liquid soap, this byproduct can cause organ toxicity and skin allergies.
- Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate): When used in sunscreen, this can speed up the development of skin tumors when exposed to sunlight.
- Oxybenzone: This endocrine disruptor is found in sunscreens and has been linked to reproductive issues.
- Phthalates and Parabens: These chemicals are used as preservatives and have been linked to endocrine disruption, allergies, asthma, and cancer.
- Fragrance: Fragrance can mask hundreds of other dangerous chemicals, including phthalates.
When reading labels, avoid products that contain ingredients like quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, polyoxymethylene urea, and bromopol.
The Solution: Safe and Gentle Products
To avoid exposing your puppy to these dangerous chemicals, choose products that are natural and free from harmful ingredients. Look for shampoos that use gentle, plant-based ingredients to cleanse your puppy without stripping their coat of its natural oils. A little research and a commitment to using safe products will keep your puppy’s coat healthy and beautiful for years to come.
