The Reality of Stress for Puppies
Stress is very real, and it can have serious consequences for your new puppy. This page is one of the most important I’ve written, so I hope you’ll keep reading and take it to heart.
As I worked on this page, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own stress these past few days. I thought to myself, Hey, I should be applying these tips to my own life! Isn’t it funny how we sometimes overlook the advice we give to others? And of course, as I was writing, I couldn’t help but think about how having dogs around always eases my stress. Studies have shown that owning a dog lowers blood pressure and I’m lucky enough to have one always ready to scoop up into my lap or curl up at my feet.
How can we possibly be upset when a little ball of fur snuggles up, kisses us, and looks at us with those loving eyes? It’s the best feeling in the world. But today, we’re not talking about our stress, we’re focusing on the stress our puppies face. So keep reading, because this is important.
The Stress Your Puppy Faces
Stress in a small puppy can actually be fatal, so understanding what can stress out your new puppy is crucial. Let’s look at what your little one is about to go through:
First, your puppy will experience their very first car ride, often with strangers and unfamiliar smells. Imagine how overwhelming that can be! Sometimes, there might be another animal in the car, which adds another layer of stress. Then, they arrive at a completely new home with more unfamiliar smells, a new cage and perhaps even more new people or animals.
The puppy’s food may remain the same, but the water will be different, the schedule will change, and they’ll be missing their home, their mom, and maybe even their siblings. That’s a lot for a little pup to process!
Handling Your Puppy With Care
I get it, you’ve been waiting for this moment! You want to shower your new puppy with love and affection, and trust me, I know how tempting it is to cuddle them nonstop. But here’s the thing, too much handling can overwhelm your puppy, and stress them even more. Constant attention, especially from excited children, can make your puppy overly tired, and when they’re too tired or stressed, they won’t want to eat.
This can lead to serious health issues, like hypoglycemia. You can learn more about that on my Hypoglycemia Page.
Stress and Health Risks
Stress can also trigger certain health conditions in puppies. Coccidia, for example, can flare up in stressed puppies. You’ll find more information on that on my Coccidia Page. Stress can even make your puppy more vulnerable to Parvo, a potentially fatal virus. This is why it’s so important to manage your puppy’s stress carefully.
One of my favorite ways to help puppies adjust to their new homes is with Essential Pet CBD Oil. This natural remedy helps calm them down and makes the transition much smoother. Trust me, this will be your best friend those first few nights, especially if your puppy cries through the night.
I can’t tell you how many times people have opted not to get it, only to call me the very next day saying, “Help! My puppy was up crying all night!” I just smile, knowing that a little CBD oil would have solved that problem.
The Bottom Line
Your puppy is going through a lot of changes, and stress is inevitable. But with a little patience, care, and thoughtful support, you can make this transition a beautiful experience. Remember, the early days are all about creating trust and security for your new little friend. Products like CBD oil can help ease them through the adjustment, but your love and attention are what matter most.
Cherish every cuddle, but give your puppy the space they need to rest and recharge. In no time, you’ll have a happy, well-adjusted companion who feels right at home and your bond will only grow stronger with each passing day. After all, this is the beginning of a wonderful journey together, filled with joy, companionship, and love.
